Church Bells to be Rung and other Celebrations as Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons comes into force

As a great ray of hope for all of humankind in these dark times, the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) is due to come into force on Friday January 22nd 2021, 90 days after ratification by Honduras, the 50th country to  ratify the Treaty.

This represents an unstoppable force in the path towards a nuclear-free world, pulling humanity back from the risk of our own destruction and that of our planet with it. Trident Ploughshares will be stepping up its campaign for the UK to follow the trend of history by signing the Treaty and renouncing Trident replacement.

On 22nd January, we are calling for public celebrations across the land, as far, wide and loud as prevailing restrictions will allow. In particular, we are calling on clergy to join us in our celebrations by ringing church bells, and have already received positive responses to this call from clergy in Wales, Scotland, England and both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. The recent letter from the Bishops in The Observer urging the UK government to sign the treaty shows that they are very much aware and on side.

Join us in marking this great day, and call on your local church ministers for their bells to ring out at 12pm on January 22nd.
