6.45am Monday 13th June around 20 peace protesters arrived at the main gate for their daily vigil for nuclear disarmament. The police seemed more intent on protecting the war crime preparations but nevertheless were friendly. Suddenly 5 women from ‘Greenham Women are Everywhere’ poured fake blood on themselves and staged a die-in right in front of the gates blocking one side of the entrance into the base. A little while later 3 people from the ‘Peace Pirates’, an affinity group from Trident Ploughshares, locked a little further on around the roundabout road. They are all long-time peace activists, incensed at the waste of resources and dangerous stupidity of the the UK government refusing to sign up and ratify the multi-lateral TPNW – the only safe way to nuclear disarmament.
Brian Quail, a retired school teacher of 84 with a triple heart bypass and disabled by a recent stroke, but nevertheless, with his arm in a lock, said ‘Trident is illegal and immoral and the worst thing in the world’. Willemien Hoogendoorn from The Netherlands who has been supporting the Faslane Peace Camp was locked onto Brian and then to Gillean Lawrence. Gillean, a grandmother and supporter of Extinction Rebellion Peace, stated ‘It is a humanitarian catastrophe with billions of pounds spent on preparing for a nuclear holocaust that does not make us safer. In fact the opposite. It could be spent on dealing with the climate emergency’.
By 8.45, 2 hours later, the police had persuaded the Greenham women to leave the road but arrested and then cut out the 3 in lock-ons, who are now on their way to police stations.
