The 15th May is celebrated as International Conscientious Objectors day when the brave people who have refused to take part in killing in wars, often at great personal cost, are remembered and celebrated. This year there was especial emphasis on the First World War which began one hundred years ago in 1914.
During the moving and inspiring ceremony in Tavistock Square relatives of WW1 conscientious objectors, many holding photos spoke of their action, their punishment and the lasting effects.
All conscientious objectors from all times and all places were also remembered with flowers. Speakers also expressed the importance of the ongoing struggle for the right to refuse to kill and the hope for an end to wars.
Afterwards members of the Muriel Lesters Trident Ploughshares affinity group travelled to the UK Head Quarters of Lockheed Martin at 15 Lower Regents Street as part of the non violent struggle for a better, more peaceful and just world. They held a banner saying “Lockheed Martin Merchants of Mega Death”
Lockheed Martin is probably the biggest arms manufacturer in the world and has a large part in producing nuclear weapons in the UK, and developing new ones.
Leaflets were given out to inform the public about Lockheed Martin, and asking those who work there to use their skills for peace.
