On the 6th of August people around the UK began a four day fast calling for global nuclear disarmament and for the disarmament of Trident, the UKs nuclear weapons. The UK fast is part of an annual international fast for nuclear disarmament that began in France.
People are fasting outside Whitehall in London, outside Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh and in the city centre in Glasgow.
Twenty people gathered at a Hiroshima Day ceremony in London outside the offices of the MOD in Whitehall. Nine of them were fasting.
In Edinburgh Ellen Moxley, now 80 began her three day fast in a tent outside Scottish Parliament at 8:15am, the hour at which the Hiroshima bomb was dropped 70 years ago. Janet Fenton is also fasting in Edinburgh.
Glasgow Catholic Worker Brian Quail is fasting and will be in Sauchiehall St in the centre of the city every day from 2pm – 4pm
The nine who are fasting in London remained all night outside the MOD offices in Whitehall.
About fifty people, including Culture Minister Fiona Hislop and Bill Kidd MSP turned up outside Scottish Parliament at noon to show support for Ellen and Janet and for nuclear disarmament.
Janet lead a ceremony casting petals on the beautiful ponds outside Scottish Parliament where lanterns were also floated recalling the tens of thousands who sought relief from the horrific burns in the river in Hiroshima and the many thousands who died.
There are half hour die ins at Whitehall every day at 2pm from the 6th through the 9th of August.
About 12 people are keeping the vigil going there continuously all the time.
People are also fasting in the US outside Lawrence Livermore Laboratories, and in France and Germany.
Several people from France Sans Armes Nucléaires came from France to join the fast in London.
