Protests Bar Builders From Nukes Site

 Morning Star in Britain

CONSTRUCTION trayic is being turned away from the government’s Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE) in Berkshire as a month-long protest against Trident warhead replacement enters its second week.

Campaigners have mounted a blockade of the base since last Monday. Supporters from the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament and Trident Ploughshares have been joined by peace activists from across Europe. Four people have been arrested so far.

Burghfield is undergoing a £734 million upgrade as part of plans to replace Trident — even though Parliament has yet to vote on renewing Britain’s nuclear arsenal. Angie Zelter of Trident Ploughshares said: “The government is slashing funding to vital services in order to squander at least £205 billion on an obsolete, useless, illegal relic which could never be used.” CND general secretary Kate Hudson said: “The government is stuck in a cold war time warp. It’s time for it to wake up to reality — it’s time to stop Trident.”
