Trident Ploughshares Press release 7 June 2016
London, 6 June 2016, 22.30 – The projected messages “Trident is a war crime” and “Stop Trident Replacement” lit up the Ministry of Defence and Houses of Parliament this evening, as fifty Trident Ploughshares <https://tridentploughshares.org/>; activists continued to blockade the gates of the UK’s Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE) at Burghfield in Berkshire, where Trident warheads are manufactured.
“Trident is a war crime because it is designed to kill millions and create a radioactive hell on Earth,” said Liz Khan, from London Women in Black <http://womeninblack.org/vigils-arround-the-world/europa/united-kingdom/london/>;. “Instead of squandering our money on building more weapons of mass destruction it’s time for Britain to join negotiations with the majority of UN member states to ban and eliminate all nuclear weapons.”
The messages opposing Trident were projected by Feral X, highlighting the responsibilities of the MoD and Parliament, due to vote in 2016 on whether to spend up to £205 billion on a new nuclear weapon system to replace Trident. In May, the UK government failed to attend UN-mandated talks <http://www.acronym.org.uk/2016/05/09/security-and-humanitarian-implications-of-relying-on-nuclear-weapons-for-deterrence-and-effective-legal-alternatives/>; on multilateral nuclear disarmament, at which the majority of UN Member States discussed how best to abolish and eliminate all nuclear weapons.
