Local people will be fasting from 8.15 am on Thursday August 6th to 11.02 am on Sunday August 9th by the War Memorial in Knighton. It will be the 75th anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and we will be expressing our total opposition to nuclear weapons, calling for their complete abolition.
The world spends $2,000,000,000,000 a year on weapons; a significant proportion of this goes into the maintenance and development by just 9 nuclear-armed states of the world’s 14,000 nuclear weapons, a small fraction of which would be sufficient to destroy the planet several times over.
This will be a socially distanced opportunity for people to engage in discussion and active listening so we can share our different views and perspectives on what real security might look like, especially in these times of pandemics, climate change and economic uncertainty. People of all views and none are welcome to join in. There will be exhibitions, paper crane making and knitting white and red poppies.
