TP founder in Gran Canaria on Global Day of Action Against Military Spending

Trident Ploughshares founder Angie Zelter  has joined activists from 40 antimilitarist groups coming from Britain, Germany, the United States, several Spanish cities and the islands of Tenerife and Gran Canaria, in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria which is not only a holiday destination, but also a Navy, Air, and Training base for military operations directed at the African continent and other countries such as Afghanistan.

Today, the 14th of April, Global Day of Action on Military Spending, in cities all around the world people are taking action to demand funding for human needs instead of spending Euros, dollars, pounds … on armaments. The message from people across the world is:

Military spending threatens our human security and all life on the planet.
Military spending feeds the arms trade.
Military spending means mortgaging our future.
Cut military spending. Stop war.

”NATO is an international nuclear armed military alliance with a policy of military aggression. I am here demonstrating against Las Palmas Navy base which is used by NATO for its self s›erving military interventions. Las Palmas Navy base forms part of an infrastructure put at the disposition of Spain, France, the European Union, NATO, and the United States, making the Canary islands an aircraft carrier and logistics base which assists in a wide range of military conflicts arising from geostrategic interests and have nothing to do with human security.

I am working with other internationals to peacefully draw people’s attention to the waste of resources that merely prop up the arms industries and take global resources away from the people who need them. Taking part in this action on this day makes people aware of how ‘normalised’ the military has become in our societies and how ordinary people must become aware of this and cut the military out of our societies to enable them to concentrate on the real security issues of our era – climate chaos and poverty.” – Angie  Zelter
